According to Toto, the best General Finance News sites are Tip'd Finance News, PF Buzz, Reddit (Financial Planning), Mixx, Twinancial and Wisebread. Their approaches vary slightly (PF Buzz takes a personal finance angle, Twinancial keeps finance tweets in one place and Wisebread has a cool interactive forum), but all excel at providing a great overview of the day's top headlines.

Toto's picks for best budget/money management are: Wesabe, a great site for making connections within its community; MoneyStrands, which allows users to easily manage money, even on-the-go; We, the Savers, geared toward connecting fellow fiscally-responsible individuals; and Google Tip Jar, a community pot of money-saving tips that users can add or take from.

For professionals looking to promote their financial services, Toto recommends: LinkedIn's Social Media and Web 2.0 in Banking and Financial Services Group; IFA Life, a great site for financial planners, wealther managers and financial advisors to interact; and Voyant, offering money management software and a place to market one's services. Rounding out the top five are ActiveRain and Sexy Insurance, tailored respectively to real estate and insurance industry professionals.

Toto caps her list with two sites that don't specialize in business or finance, but are tremendously useful for offering a broader perspective. StumbleUpon allows the user to either literally "stumble upon" a random sampling of financial websites, or streamline selections according to popularity; and Kirtsy, aimed at women, often publishes financial articles in a variety of categories, not just business and politics as per the usual.

CEO Post: Kapitall Gets a “Geek-Preview” at MIT and the Wired Store

Recently Kapitall participated in a couple of great events.

In mid-November co-founder David Neubert and I presented at MIT’s Global Entrepreneurship Week. We took an audience of students, faculty and budding entrepreneurs through our experience building Kapitall. We’re really only just starting ourselves, but it was fun to be able to share what we’ve learned along the way.

Even cooler is our participation in the 5th annual Wired Store in New York City, where you can explore our groundbreaking investing interface on a giant touchscreen. At the opening, it was great to see so many people ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the design and usability of the Playground—and moving company icons around the screen with the flick of a finger.
Kapitall has been live for just over three weeks, and even though we’re not actively publicizing our beta too much, we’ve already received a good deal of coverage and user feedback. Most has been really enthusiastic, but some has been a little skeptical. I think both are pretty telling.

First some positive stuff from the media:

In Mashable’s Spark of Genius column, we were called “revolutionary.” Money Under 30 said we do “for investing what the iPhone did for cell phones.” Investment News said “the design should have some real consumer appeal.”

We’ll take the praise of course, but the skepticism may be even more revealing:

In CBS Moneywatch, Allan Roth said, “gaming is a lot of fun” and “they’ve definitely got the fun thing down.” But he also went on to say that “in theory it makes all kinds of sense to try and tap into the universal experience of the next generation of techie investors coming up. […] But it teaches short-term speculation rather than investing.”

When we set out to build Kapitall, we expected to hear concerns that we were trivializing a serious matter. But are we? We set out to make investing more inclusive by leveraging game mechanics; Kapitall uses this approach to help users build successful and appropriate portfolios, not to become stock pickers. We emphatically did not set out to influence where or why anyone should invest. There are plenty of voices doing that already.

On Kapitall, you will be able invest not only in stocks but also in mutual funds and ETFs. You can choose the strategy – which in many cases will be “buy and hold.” And with Kapitall, as opposed to other online brokers, you will always be able to invest in practice portfolios – no real money required.

In fact, we believe that giving more people the tools to grow their investing knowledge in a fun, low stakes environment is a good thing. Whether they choose to become self-directed investors or simply take a more active role in working with their advisors, more knowledge and confidence can only help.

I’ll leave you with an interesting comment from a beta tester. We’d love to hear what you think too!

I consider this project a very worthy tool to fix a very real problem: under-interested and under-educated investors (in my opinion, a pretty high perecentage of the 18 - 35 year old market). You might not have created the next lightning-fast trading platform, but from where I sit you made a great tool for what i believe is your intended audience...people who should start investing and learning about investing.

Last week was another confusing one for investors, as news appeared that the U.S. economy has finally shaken off the longest recession since World War II, yet the stock market fluctuated wildly.

It was announced that the nation’s gross domestic product expanded by an estimated 3.5% in the third quarter of 2009, which drove the Dow up by nearly 200 points on Thursday – its biggest one-day gain in more than three months. But on Friday, the Dow gave it all back, and then some.

Time to break out the champagne?

There is anything but a consensus regarding just how lasting the recovery may be. Among the many nagging concerns: unemployment, which is currently hovering near 10%, and stagnant wages for those lucky enough to have kept their jobs. Many analysts predict that without a protracted boost in consumer spending, the current recovery may very well be short-lived.

Using Kapitall to stay ahead of the curve

All of this uncertainty makes Kapitall even more useful, as investors seek tools to stay on top of the markets. With Kapitall’s “News Viewer,” users get insight into the broader economy, as well as detailed information about specific companies and sectors. They can search by topic or company, and can track breaking news on separate feeds from top media outlets such as AP and Reuters. All of this is presented in Kapitall’s user-friendly, “drag & drop” interface, so users get the information they need with greater ease.
It has certainly been a wild year for investors, and last week was no exception. The one thing we can be certain about: the coming weeks and months will provide no shortage of twists and turns.

Some of these ideas are controversial, while others are a bit more conventional. Please let us know what you think of these designs...

The Kapitall Cube: For us, the Rubik's Cube is a symbol of the "serious gaming" trend. Kapitall is not a game, but we use several design principles from the world of video games to interact with financial data. We're even considering using the "Kapitall Cube" as a navigation tool for company analysis, but Cordell will have the final say on that.

The Remember Campaign: With the rapid evolution of information design, why has the investing interface remained the same over the last few years? Why must the investing interface still look like a Black and White TV?

Is This Too Controversial? We're a site for online investing, and we're not trying to make a political statement, but with a name like Kapitall this kind of ad is inevitable. Is this commercial too far out? Let us know...

Just five days in, and all of us here are thrilled to be “live” and see how Kapitall takes shape. Since launching our first generation beta on Monday, a lot of new investors have joined and, so far, the response has been enormously positive. Our new Kapitallists are already playing with many of the site’s features: building their investor profiles (DNA), creating portfolios, and customizing their playgrounds with companies and funds that interest them most. Of course, having a 200-point swing in the Dow on launch day only added to the excitement!

Some of our more enterprising users have begun establishing networks and are sharing ideas with friends and other like-minded Kapitallists. Along with our friendly, “drag and drop” interface and our intuitive tools, this makes the Kapitall experience stand apart from traditional investing sites. Kapitall is more than just a repository for stock quotes and financial data—it’s a place to make investing more interesting and more enjoyable.

We look forward to your feedback on what you like, what you think still needs work, and what you’d love to see on the site going forward. And to those of you still thinking about diving into Kapitall, come on in—it’s free to join and fun to use!

Co-founding a new company also illicits the same quantity of unsolicited (and yet still useful) advice. What surprised me at first, and then became completely obvious, is the similarity of the nuptial and venture advice. The number of times I have heard, "A startup is like a marriage" or "a marriage is a lifelong project" forces thinking.

Just a few of the tips I have received from both long-time married couples and successful entrepreneurs:

- Work at communication all the time.
- Choose someone you can trust in both good times and tough times.
- Have a plan for how you will resolve differences.
- This relationship will last a long time and it will take work.
- You are embarking on the most rewarding hard work you will ever have.
- Make sure you agree on how to handle additional people in your venture before you add them.
