Kapitall In The Blogosphere

Kapitall has been burning up the blogs this week, garnering glowing reviews from some great tech sites. A few weeks back, Jen Edwards of PC Magazine sat down with our CEO Gaspard de Dreuzy to talk shop and clearly, she was impressed. Her recent post on AppScout raves that "Kapitall brings the fun and social to investing," calling our platform "easy to use" and "graphically-pleasing." Meanwhile, the Online Investing AI Blog is touting Kapitall as the next big thing in investing: "It's great to see a company taking a refreshing approach to the same old stock portfolio website . . . . Definitely much more intuitive and useful than a list of stocks that you find with other portfolio management systems." And over the weekend, Onlne Investing Guru ran a post entitled "Capital Service From Kapitall," in which the author calls our user experience "quick and easy to learn," predicting that "people who may have been put off by the rather conservative approaches taken by other websites may well find Kapitall a refreshing change." Way to go, team!

They've been hard at work on a variety of projects, everything from site content to university outreach to grassroots community building, all the while getting a crash course in the wacky world of investing. Kapitall Nabs $5M Angel Funding For Visual Investing Site

Dow Jones VentureWire: A number of start-ups are attempting to bring Web 2.0-style crowd-sourcing to stock and bond investing. A new company, Stereo Scope Inc., doing business as Kapitall.com, is putting its own twist on this trend with its visually oriented interface and gaming-oriented mechanics targeting users aged 21 to 39.

Kapitall has raised $5 million in angel funding from investors including three Kapitall board members: Lee Barba, former chief executive of Investools Inc., where he led the acquisition of Thinkorswim Group; Anne Busquet, formerly of American Express Co. and IAC/InterActiveCorp.; and Michael Haller, who was vice president of Sammy Studios and vice president at Electronic Arts Inc. Valuation was not disclosed.

Like other sites, Kapitall enables people to share their investing ideas with friends and follow other investors.

But Kapitall organizes stocks on a sort of digital tabletop interface, with each stock looking like a square card or tile. Users can drag and drop these stocks into groups to follow and click on them to get lively charts as well as company information. The aim is to be more appealing to younger people than typical investing sites, which are hard for new investors to relate to.

"It's much more easily digestible," said Stephan Roche, Kapitall president. "It's like the Wii versus the Xbox. It's an easier way for novice investors to get into investing."

People can set up practice portfolios on Kapitall to learn about investing. They can also link their account to TD Ameritrade through a new deal, in which users can both see their TD Ameritrade accounts and buy and sell as they would on that investing site.

The company is also planning to soon release a gaming feature on the site, where users can win virtual credits for learning about investing.

Founded in 2008, Kapitall expects to close a $5 million Series A with venture investors in the next six months, Roche said.

Others in this busy space include Covestor Inc., KaChing Group Inc., Wikinvest Inc. and Cake Financial Corp., which was acquired in January by Etrade Financial Corp.
