Seattle had it's biggest snow storm in twenty years.  I happened to be spending the week in Maui with my family.  The time difference with New York is five hours and that meant getting up well before sunrise to start research and trading but somehow I managed to survive.  It's a busy time for me as i'm working on setting up portfolios to share with new users as well as building out my new year value portfolio.

What Startups Are Really Like

I recently got married and one of the things I didn't realize was how much advice I would get on how to have a good marriage. Co-founding a new company also illicits the same quantity of unsolicited (and yet still useful) advice. What surprised me at first, and then became completely obvious, is the similarity of the nuptial and venture advice. The number of times I have heard, "A startup is like a marriage" or "a marriage is a lifelong project" forces thinking. 

Just a few of the tips I have received from both long-time married couples and successful entrepreneurs:

- Work at communication all the time.
- Choose someone you can trust in both good times and tough times.
- Have a plan for how you will resolve differences.
- This relationship will last a long time and it will take work.
- You are embarking on the most rewarding hard work you will ever have.
- Make sure you agree on how to handle additional people in your venture before you add them.

The average cost of a wedding can exceed $30K, according to the American Weddings study conducted by The Fairchild Bridal Group. They estimate that U.S. couples spent $125B on weddings during 2005 - about the size of Ireland's GDP.
